Gross greenhouse gas emissions

This indicator shows New Zealand’s total gross greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (kT CO2-e). Gross GHG emissions are the total emissions from agriculture, energy, industrial processes and product use, and waste. Gross GHG emissions do not include removals from land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF).

Gross GHG emissions are measured in ‘CO2 equivalent’ because this means different greenhouse gases can be consistently reported and compared.

Gross GHG emissions in 2017 were

23%
higher than 1990 levels
