This indicator will show how many New Zealanders live in a crowded household. The term ‘crowded housing’ is difficult to define as to a large extent, it depends on cultural and personal expectations of space. There is no single international standard definition of ‘crowding’. However, we use the Canadian National Occupancy Standard (CNOS). In this case, a household is considered to be crowded if it needs one or more extra bedrooms to adequately accommodate all the household members.
